Pasadena

Pasadena (#150410) (1887-1930s) , 141-foot wood-hulled commercial steam schooner built in San Francisco for the Kerckhoff & Cuzner Mill & Lumber Company. She was reported to be the first seagoing vessel to use oil for fuel, a flammant much cheaper than coal. From 1903-1908 she was owned by C. P. Doe. According to Santa Cruz Island Company records, on October 6, 1903 Pasadena delivered 302 heifers from Paso Robles to Santa Cruz Island. Mrs. Ambrose Gherini remembered:

“In a letter from my grandmother written on July 4, 1904, she speaks of the schooner Pasadena being due at Prisoners’ Harbor to pick up a load of wool, bundles of hide and 590 sheep. These latter were already in the corrals at Prisoners’ awaiting to be loaded. She said 'we won't expect to receive any mail through here because it's the Eureka, which makes a call here on her way directly to San Francisco.'” [SCIF OP #1, p. 67] Pasadena was sold to Albion Lumber Company in 1908, and in the 1930s, she was abandoned in Oakland Creek's “rotten row.”

March 29, 1904 [SCICo National Diary 1903]: “On the 6th October, 1903 aboard the Pasadena were imported on the island 302 heifers from Paso Robles: 99 between 15 and 24 months old, 203 calves between 5 and 9 months old… A few suffered from the hardships of transportation…”


August 18, 1904 [SBMP]: “Happenings at Pelican Bay. Quite a fleet of vessels anchored in the bay Tuesday. The steamer Pasadena, with 300 head of island sheep on board bound for San Francisco, the island schooner Santa Cruz, yacht Pride, launch Fortuna and sloop Alpha from San Pedro...”


July 9, 1905 [SBMP]: “The lumber steamer Pasadena recently loaded a cargo of sheep at Prisoners’ Harbor, Santa Cruz Island for Eureka, Humboldt County. The lumber vessels bringing the product of the northern mills to the southern ports usually return under ballast, and the shipment of sheep in such large quantities from the Santa Barbara island is quite out of the ordinary.”


October 7, 1905 [SBMP]: “The steamer Pasadena put into port late yesterday afternoon and took on a cargo of stock, mostly horses, consigned to Santa Cruz Island. The Pasadena came south a few days ago from Eureka with a cargo of lumber for San Pedro, and is now on her return trip to the northern port. She has carried other cargoes for the Santa Cruz Island Company. After unloading the stock at Prisoners’ Harbor, she will sail on north without returning to this port.”


October 7, 1905 [SBMP]: “The steamer Pasadena arrived from San Pedro last evening and will be engaged several days conveying freight to and from Santa Cruz Island. Supplies for the various ranches on the islands will be taken from Santa Barbara and produce will be returned. Manager Caire of the island is now in Santa Barbara superintending the shipping.”
