Pila del Sur, Santa Cruz Island [Sp., south trough], a watering trough located at the site of the former Rancho del Sur and its existing fruit orchard on the eastern end of the island’s Central Valley. For many decades it was stocked with goldfish, which continued to thrive in its waters, despite predation by an occasional great blue heron. Today the pila is dry.
