Potrero Matanza

The Potrero Matanza lies on the northern side of the canyon above the Callejon between the Sur Ranch and the vineyard known as the Mondo Novo. It is composed of steep cuchillos and rough canyons, and contains 385 acres. The feed consists of wild oats and alfilerilla. There is a large amount of cactus, brush and scrub oak with Coast oak in the canyons. The soil is rocky with many outcroppings of volcanic rock. The water supply consists of a few small springs and the potrero is better suited to sheep than cattle. It is used in the corridas as a trap for the sheep from Pinos Chicos and Las Rinconadas and sometimes to hold sheep intended for sale. [Symmes 1922:24]
