RAY, Milton S.

RAY, Milton Smith (1881-1946) was an industrialist, ornithologist and poet, author of Awarded prize for “San Francisco,” used for Sesquicentennial Celebration in San Francisco, 1926. He was the son of William S. Ray (manufacturer, ship-owner) and Julia Henrietta (Ruth) R. Ray.

Ray became secretary, treasurer and director W. S. Ray Manufacturing Company, San Francisco, 1907, elected vice president, 1915. Secretary, treasurer Ray Burner Company of California, 1929, Ray Burner Company of Delaware, 1930. President, treasurer, director Ray Burner Company of Delaware, San Francisco, and New York, 1933, and same, Ray Oil Burner Company and subsidiaries since 1935.

He served as curator and director Pacific Museum of Ornithology from 1904. He explored over 35 countries, obtaining specimens for the Museum. The Milton S. Ray papers are located in the MVZ, Berkeley. The collection consists primarily of field books and specimen records of ornithological field work and collecting done throughout the Western United States, as well as other areas of North America, between the years 1889 and 1946. The collection also contains correspondence, historical notes, invoices, and price lists from Milton S. Ray's extensive ornithological and oological work.

Ray authored: The Farallones, The Painted World, and Other Poems of California San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1934. Limited Edition. Hardcover. One of 2000 copies, quarto size, two volumes (complete), 225 pp.
