Orthopterist, David Rentz, in Australia, 2017

RENTZ, David C. (b. 1941), received his PhD in Entomology from the University of California, Berkeley. During his early studies he conducted research on the California Channel Islands.

Rentz worked at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, and then in San Francisco, before moving to Australia. Rentz discovered the Farallon Cricket, a new genus and endemic species, and named it in 1972.

From 1976 to 2001 Rentz was Curator of Orthopteroid Insects in the Australian National Insect Collection, Canberra (CSIRO). His research specialty, the katydids (family Tettigoniidae) has resulted in numerous papers and three volumes of a Monograph of Australian Tettigoniidae.

Rentz and his family moved to Kuranda, Queensland, Australia in 2002 when he retired.

Dave Rentz is number 231 of the All Eight Club. He had been to all eight islands long before most, and multiple times on each. Fellow entomologists Vincent Lee and Dave Weissman accompanied Rentz on multiple island field trips.
