RITA, legendary Santa Rosa Island inhabitant reputed to live at China Camp on the island’s south side. She was well-known for her talents of keeping visitors company. According to historian Clif Smith (1920-1999), the legendary Rita is based on Rita Morres, the sister of Nora Morres, Assistant Director of the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for many years. Spinstress sisters Rita and Nora lived together most of their lives. The road leading to China Camp is called Rita's Road. A pot holder on the wall in the camp has the name Rita on it.
