December 14, 1961 [OPC]: “Point Mugu — The Navy has officially closed the search for an F9F jet that crashed into the sea near San Nicolas Island Dec. 4 taking the pilot, Lt. Thomas Rose, 26, 959-D Park Street, Port Hueneme, to his death. Requiem mass for Lt. Rose was celebrated in the memorial Chapel at Point Mugu on Dec. 7 by Cmdr. W. P. Lane, Catholic chaplain. A Navy spokesman said today that it will probably never be determined what caused the jet to crash. Lt. Rose, ground training officer for the Naval Missile Targets department, was practicing landings on the island. He leaves a widow, Marialice, and two children, Thomas, 4, and Cathleen, 3.”
