ROTHSTEIN, Maurice (c. 1921-1968), drowned while skindiving at Santa Cruz Island on August 4, 1968. He was on a day trip aboard the Scuba King out of Ventura Sportfishing, Ventura Harbor. Tim Crawford was the captain; Kirk Connally was the deck hand. Rothstein had been free diving for black sea bass with a spear gun. One of the other divers spotted him on the sea floor in 90 feet of water. Several divers recovered his body, and prolonged CPR attempts failed. Rothstein was 47 years old.

August 5, 1968 [Redlands Daily Facts]: “Diver drowns off island. Ventura—A 47-year-old Torrance man was drowned Sunday while skindiving off Santa Cruz Island, the coroner's office reported today. A spokesman for the office said Maurice Rothstein of 105 W. 178th St., was swimming off a charter boat with other members of a party from Torrance including his son, Daniel, 20, when he disappeared. Members of the party later found his body on the bottom.”
