SLEDGE, Lloyd D. ( -1987), Navy commander killed in his Grumman A-6E Intruder on September 23, 1987. Navigator, Lt. John A. Morrison survived.
A-6 Intruder BuNo. 155674/NL-512 of VA-52, US Navy, based at Whidbey Island, Washington, Naval Air Station. Late night crash on September 23, 1987 off Santa Catalina Island, California 30 minutes after having taken off from the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) to fly back to Whidbey Naval Air Station.
Of the two crew, Commander Lloyd D. Sledge (pilot) suffered from Oxygen starvation, which is believed to be the cause the pilot did not eject. His body was never recovered, nor was any wreckage found. The bombardier/navigator, Lt. John A. Morrison ejected and was rescued.
