June 15, 1892 LAH]: “The remains of Dr. James A. Smith lie at the undertaking establishment of Hopkins & Cussen, where they will be embalmed and thence shipped east. Dr. Smith, who was only 31 years old, came to Southern California from New York several months ago for his health, but his journey did not avail him, as he died at Avalon, Catalina Island, on Monday morning. The body was brought over to San Pedro in a sailboat, arriving there on Monday night. The deceased leaves a young wife. He was a member of the A. O. U. W., who evinced considerable interest in his welfare while in Los Angeles.“
