San Antonio [a.k.a. El Principe], , captained by Juan Pérez as a part of the Portolá expedition, stopped at Santa Cruz Island on March 29, 1769 to take on wood and water. Two Franciscans on board landed at Prisoners' Harbor and left behind a staff topped by an iron cross. The staff was returned to them by the island Indians, and this incident resulted in the island's being named Isla de la Santa Cruz, Island of the Holy Cross.
