Small Hill Mine, Santa Catalina Island

In the News~

July 19, 1867 [SDU]: “Catalina Mines, — The Wilmington Journal says: We have recently seen some very rich argentiferous galena specimens from Catalina Island, taken from the Small Hill mine 150 feet below the surface, and 500 feet above the level of the sea. Arrangements are being made to work these mines more extensively than heretofore. It is in contemplation to erect a smelting furnace on the island. The ore has heretofore been shipped to San Francisco, under great disadvantage.”
