August 5, 2005 [Coast Guard Press Release]: “ COAST GUARD RECOVERS TWO PEOPLE, TWO DOGS FROM CATALINA ISLAND. SAN DIEGO - An HH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from U.S. Coast Guard Sector San Diego recovered two people and two dogs from Catalina Island, today, after their vessel ran aground Thursday afternoon. The two men and their dogs were transported, by the Jayhawk, to Sector San Diego in good condition. Sector San Diego received a 1:50 p.m. call, Thursday, from the sailing vessel Tropical Penguin stating their 54-foot sailing vessel was aground on Catalina Island. The vessel lost power after raising anchor and was unable to maneuver. The two men decided to stay overnight on the island. Sector San Diego launched a Jayhawk helicopter, at 7 a.m., to provide the distressed men with a radio. Commercial salvage made attempts to remove the vessel from the beach, but was unsuccessful. The decision was then made to recover the men and dogs from the island. The Jayhawk helicopter landed on the beach, assisted the men with their equipment and returned the men and their dogs to Sector San Diego. All people and pets were in good condition. Video of the Jayhawk on the beach, recovery of the men and pets, and return to Sector San Diego is available at the Sector San Diego front gate, located at 2710 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego.”
