U.S.S. Prime (#MSO-466) (1952-1977+), 172-foot W.W. II minesweeper first sold for scrap in 1977. William “Pete” Petersen and Ray Cummings towed Prime onto the beach at Scorpion Harbor on the east end of Santa Cruz Island for metal salvage. Their first attempt to burn her failed, because Prime was so water-logged she wouldn't burn. They managed to burn her in half and salvage the nonferrous metals. Large parts of the bow and stern washed in and out of Scorpion Harbor for years, until finally the pieces did not return.
