WALKER, Lewis Wayne

WALKER, Lewis Wayne (1905-1971), Massachusetts-born taxidermist, author, wildlife photographer and naturalist interested in ornithology who worked at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum for seventeen years (1954-1970). He was particularly interested in Baja California, Mexico. As a young man living in New York, Walker worked at the American Museum of Natural History. Later in San Diego in the 1930s, Walker worked for the San Diego Natural History Museum for about six years.

April 13-May 7, 1938, Walker, accompanied by museum colleagues Norman Bilderback, J. Elton Green and Lee W. Arnold, participated in a Channel Islands expedition aboard Novia del Mar, owned by Robert P. Scripps. They visited Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara, San Nicolas, San Miguel and Santa Cruz islands. On April 18, 1938 on Santa Catalina Island Walker shot an immature bald eagle.

April 13, 1938 [LAT]: “San Diego scientists leave on sea cruise. San Diego, April 12.—Carrying five San Diego scientists, the Novia del Mar, yacht of the late Robert P. Scripps, publisher, left today on a thirty-day cruise among the islands off the coast of California. The personnel includes, besides four members of the Natural History Museum staff, a representative of the San Diego Museum. J. Felton Green, zoologist, has charge of the party, other members being Lewis W. Walker, zoologist and photographer; Lee Arnold, ornithologist and mammalogist; Malcolm J. Rogers, archaeologist; and Norman Bilderback, artist and assistant.”


May 8, 1938 [SanDU]: “Channel Islands expedition finds rare specimens… Three members of the scientific party who returned here yesterday from an exploration trip in the Channel Islands: Lee Arnold, Lewis Walker with an immature bald eagle from Catalina Island, and J. Elton Green. The party reported heavy winds and seas on most of the trip…”


June 7, 1971 [LAT]: “Private funeral services for Lewis Wayne Walker, 65, one of the nation’s outstanding experts on desert wildlife, were held Sunday. Mr. Walker, who died Friday after open-heart surgery, had recently retired as associate director of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum near Tucson. He was a former curator of exhibits at the San Diego Natural History Museum. He had written more than 2000 articles for such magazines as National Geographic, Natural History and Nature and recently wrote a book, Survival Under the Sun. He was also one of the nation’s leading nature photographers. Mr. Walker leaves his wife, Melanie and a brother.”
