WESTON, Benjamin Price

WESTON, Benjamin Price (1892-1947), son of Orin and Sarah Weston, and namesake to his great uncle, Ben Weston of Santa Catalina Island note. Ben Price Weston developed a great interest in sailing, and was well known among yacht club circles of southern California. He served as commodore to both the Los Angeles Yacht Club and California Yacht Club. In 1915 Benjamin Price Weston married Helen Dorothea Ross and they had daughter:

3. Susan Somers (b. 1945) = Hanson

His second wife was Gladys. Benjamin Price Weston died in Los Angeles at age 54 on January 9, 1947. He is buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery.

July 7, 1911 [LAT]: “Bennie Weston, owner of the yawl Clipper, will make a trip to Santa Barbara Island in his boat early in August. From there he will cruise for a few weeks around Santa Catalina Island with a party of friends. Bennie spent several weeks at the island last summer in the Windsome and liked it so well that he wants to explore every point of interest around the big island.”

July 21, 1912 [LAT]: “Cruising in the channel… The yawl Clipper, owned by Ben Weston, visited Santa Barbara Island and San Nicolas Island. The start was made from San Pedro breakwater… From Johnson’s Landing [Santa Catalina Island] the start was made for Santa Barbara Island… At present there is no animal life on the place with the exception of sea birds that make it their home. On the west slopes of the hill, on bluffs that drop a hundred or more feet to the water, hundreds of sea gulls, loons, shags, and pelicans have their nests and raise their young… The only sign of human life is the hut of some Jap fishermen, which is stuck in a niche in the east side. All around the island are caves and blowholes…”

August 1, 1924 [LAT]: “Commodore Ben Weston and Star Fleet Captain Owen Churchill, of the California Yacht Club, will take Weston’s Star boat, the California, to Long Island Sound in a third try for the International Star boat championship…”

June 7, 1927 [LAT]: “The Noble Debra, flying the burgee of the Los Angeles Yacht Club and skippered by Ben Weston, took second honors for the series…”

January 10, 1947 [LAT]: “Deaths. Weston, Benjamin Price, beloved husband of Gladys N. Weston, son of Mrs. Orin S. Weston, father of Mrs. Harvey Somers. Masonic services 2 P.M. Saturday under auspices of Wilshire Lodge No. 445, F. & A.M., at Pierce Brothers Little Church Around the Corner, 3443 W. Manchester Blvd., Inglewood.”
